FAQ
Construction job costing FAQ
Straight answers to the questions contractors ask before they switch to job costing software.
What is construction job costing software?
Job costing software assigns every cost — materials, labor, and subcontractor work — to the specific job it belongs to, so you can see what a job actually cost against what you estimated. JobCostIT captures those costs at the moment they happen (a scanned receipt, a clocked hour) rather than reconciling them from a spreadsheet later.
How does JobCostIT track material costs?
You photograph a receipt and the AI extracts the vendor, amount, date, and trade category, then files it to the active job (or to company overhead for non-job costs like fuel). No manual line entry is required.
How are labor costs tracked per job?
Each crew member logs in with their own email and clocks onto the job they are working. Hours attach to that job at their pay rate, so labor cost flows onto the job ledger automatically. Lunch breaks, overtime, and double-time are all configurable.
Does JobCostIT replace my accounting software?
No. JobCostIT is job-cost and operations software — it tracks costs, hours, receipts, estimates, and invoices per job. Most contractors run it alongside their accounting tool and export clean numbers at the end of a period or at tax time.
Which billing methods does JobCostIT support?
Cost-plus, fixed bid, hourly, and time-and-materials. You can set a default for your company and override it per job.
Can my crew use it without a shared device?
Yes. Crew members scan a QR invite or follow an invite link, log in on their own phone, and clock in to whichever job they are on. A 4-digit PIN is available as a backup if a phone is not handy.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. You can start a free trial and capture your first receipt and crew hours within minutes — no credit card is required to try it.
Who is JobCostIT built for?
Residential and light-commercial contractors — general contractors, remodelers, custom builders, handymen, and the trades crews who work alongside them. It works the same on a phone in the field and a laptop in the office.
Want to see it on your own job?
The fastest way to answer "does this work for me" is to scan one of your own receipts. Find more detail in our guides on construction job costing software, estimate vs actual costs, and JobCostIT vs spreadsheets.
